Principal's   Message

Dear parents and carers

Term 3 is well underway!

It has been great to see the students engaging in their learning and with their peers in a positive and productive manner. Many of our students have been acknowledged for their hard work and positive behaviour by receiving PBL certificates. These awards are given to students for demonstrating our Respect, Responsible and Learner expectations. So far this year teachers have awarded over 40,000 positive acknowledgements across the school. These points are allocated to individual students and to House groups. The results for House points are looking very close…

Our Administration and Building Services teams have been working hard to update and refresh our learning spaces. New carpet, epoxy flooring and painting has made a significant difference to our Woodlands and Vast buildings. Windows and new furniture are also being installed in the Mulligans building. These changes will make the learning spaces more open and inviting for our students to use.

Finally, some special acknowledgements:
  • Anita Sutherland and our Cultural Integrity team for our NAIDOC week celebrations and activities.
  • Our Kindergarten team for coordinating the 100 days of Kindy celebration.
  • The year 5 and 6 teams for hosting the very exciting Market Day.
  • The first session for our new P – 10 Buddy program last Friday. It was a big success and thanks to all involved.

Thank you

Ben Davies
Executive Principal

2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 18 August to 8 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.
For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:
  • A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data; and
  • An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys & Evaluation with 'from' address EDU@qualtrics-survey.com.
If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, please contact your school. If you do not have an email listed with the school, you may come in and complete a hard copy of the survey.
The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.
For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

Worm Farm Project - Years 4 and 5

Did you know that Australia generates more than 7.6million tonnes of food waste every year? When dumped into landfill, this food waste leads to methane production – a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO2. To help address this problem, the school has begun its worm farm project with Years 4 and 5. If successful, the project will expand across the school alongside the growing worm population. You can help by donating your old newspapers to Mr Newman located in the Joseland building or leave them with the Front Office.

Is your child leaving Harrison School in 2024? If so, please complete this online form as soon as possible to help us plan and prepare for 2024! https://forms.gle/hhUpdjE2K4aopE2X7
If your child is continuing at Harrison School in 2024, you do not need to complete this form. Your child’s enrolment will automatically continue next year.
Harrison School NAIDOC Week

Harrison School celebrated NAIDOC week throughout week 10 of term 3. We were fortunate to have students and staff participate in many activities and experiences.

Weaving skills were taught to students as part of a lesson on Aboriginal crafts. Aboriginal culture uses weaving as a form of storytelling and a way of passing on knowledge. It was a great opportunity for our students to create woven crafts and share stories.

A story time was held by our own librarian, reading "My Culture, and Me" by Gregg Dreise. In this book Gregg Driese tells the story of the diverse cultures and histories of this country.

We were lucky to have participated in workshops led by Leah Brideson and Amy Minchin, two Aboriginal artists with extensive cultural knowledge, from this we gained a deeper understanding of Aboriginal traditions. Participating in dances and forming artworks also allowed us to explore our creativity.

We played a game of Buroinjin which had junior and senior students faced off against the teachers. Buroinjin is a ball game originally played with kangaroo skin and grass balls. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all playing and supporting.

An assembly celebrating NAIDOC was held in the school on the Thursday morning. Richie and Kane Allan performed a smoking ceremony, Welcome to Country, and didgeridoo performance. We had many of our own students perform dances and songs at the assembly. Seeing so many community members, families, and friends for this special NAIDOC event was wonderful.

Harrison School is committed to reconciliation and have initiated a student voice project in 2023 that will unite, teach history, and spread cultures. Our community is invited to learn more about this project by viewing the poster.

CBCA Book Week 2023

This year our Library will be celebrating Book Week during the week of August 21.

Across Book Week, classes will engage in fun activities around children’s literature and have opportunity to explore Children’s Book Council of Australia nominated Shortlisted texts for 2023. https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2023 https://cbca.org.au/

On Friday August 25 we will be holding our Book Week Parade in the Gym. Students from P- 6 will be invited to let their imaginations run wild and celebrate their favourite literary characters in costume.
This is always a fun event for the kids and costumes in previous years have been quite amazing. So put your thinking caps on and start preparing now.

Students are invited to enter a Design A Diorama or A Book Cover competition. Come to the library for more details. Entries close week 5.
