Principal's   Message

Dear parents and carers,

It has been a busy and productive term 3 with lots of learning taking place in all of our classrooms. Students continue to build upon the knowledge and skills they've acquired, as they work with their peers and teachers to learn new and exciting things. As always, we encourage parents and guardians to engage in open communication with teachers to ensure the best learning and wellbeing outcomes for every child.

Congratulations to Kirralee Larkin who has been successful in winning a new role in the Education Directorate. Kirralee has been an important part of our school, developing systems and processes to support our students, staff and community. Grace Brassington will step into the Corporate Manager position until the end of the year.

Welcome to Smriti Sharma. Smriti is taking over from Nada Zarac as the Deputy Principal of Learning Support. This is an important role in our school as it supports:

  1. Inclusive education for students with a diverse learning needs.
  2. English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D).
  3. Coordinating the MiniLit and MaqLit programs.

Smriti has hit the ground running and is getting to know the students, staff and families at Harrison School.

Our 3 – 6 SRC has been busy campaigning for improved playground upgrades. Due to their thoughtful proposals and persistent questioning, they have secured 4 basketball hoops, new handball courts, playground chalk boards and cricket stumps. Well done to the SRC members.

Finally, some special acknowledgements:

  • Students and teachers who participated in Robocup. They have made the national finals!
  • All of our students who have represented in sports carnivals.
  • Our year 3 day camp to Birrigai.
  • The enthusiastic competitors in Tournament of Minds competition.
  • Our talented Limelight performers.
  • Staff who coordinated the ICAS assessments and students who participated.

Have a safe school holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone in term 4.

Ben Davies
Executive Principal

As always, please stay in touch with us via info@harrison.act.edu.au or phone our friendly front office team on (02) 6142 2200.

Congratulations to the RoboCup Junior ACT winners from Harrison School. 🏆💻🤖

Our programmers came first in the Maze Rescue challenge and Line Rescue Challenge. Congratulations Harrison!

Thank you Ms. Beyroutieh, for coordinating RoboCup and supporting the teams😊

Year 3 travelled to Camp Birrigai on Tuesday, check out some of the cool things that they got up to. We were happy to see big smiles and blue skies on this fun day, full of exploring and learning! 🚍🗺☀️

The staff and students had a wonderful time. We thank all of the staff involved in organising this wonderful experience for our students! 😀

The Garden Club and Waste Warrior volunteers have continued reducing our waste footprint this term. We have saved 5.8kg of organic waste and 100s of containers from ending up in landfill. Our 10c container deposits have supported Ms Crawford’s Step into the Limelight students.

Please contact Mr Newman at Shane.Newman@ed.act.edu.au if you would like to find out more about the school’s waste reduction program.

Harrison School is happy to announce that 71% of our year 5s, and 100% of our year 6s have shown great progress since starting this program.

Congratulations to the students who competed in the Tournament of Minds at the Australian National University.

Our Harrison School team performed very well and had an enjoyable experience.

Thank you to Norma and Jatinder for helping the teams prepare and for supporting them on the weekend!

Finally, thank you to Donna, Ujala, and Peter for supporting our teams on Saturday and Sunday. I know they all really appreciated this!

On Wednesday the 8th of September, a group of 35 students from Years 3 to 6 represented Harrison School at Step into the Limelight Gala. Step into the Limelight is the major arts showcase event for ACT public schools and included over 1000 students from across the ACT. This year’s theme was ‘Celebrate - 50 Years of the ACT School System’. After months of practice, students performed at Llewellyn Hall (ANU School of Music) on Wednesday night, where professional musicians from all over the world have played.  Harrison’s dance performance was choreographed by the students and told the story of two rival dance styles, Hip Hop and Lyrical, who battle it out to prove which one is best. They ultimately decide to make friends and work together collaboratively for their love of dance.

I am so very proud of this group of students who showed dedication over months of lunch time rehearsals to perfect this performance. They all developed their dance skills and confidence performing in front of an audience, in fact performing in front of over 1200 people on the night!

I would like to thank Menosha De Silva who accompanied us on our excursions to rehearsals this week as well as Courtney Blanch, Amanda Rankin and Jamie Walkden who helped with make-up and costuming on the night. We had several lovely comments both from the Gala staff, other teachers and audience members who were impressed by our polished and creative performance. Everyone involved had so much fun sharing our love of the Arts with the community.

Students from Years 1-6 are having a blast at Deadly Mob this term! We have been cooking, exploring the seasons, playing Indigenous games and working on a collaborative artwork. It has been so wonderful to have so many of our Deadly Mob students attending our sessions. Deadly Mob is a great way for students who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander to connect with each other and learn through cultural experiences.

We are really excited for our Week 10 activity – an On Country Walk to explore an important local Indigenous site and an afternoon tea to celebrate a wonderful term. We hope to see as many of our Deadly Mob students and their families attending as possible!

Chief Minister's Read Challenge 2023

Congratulations to all the students from years K–6 who completed the reading challenge this year.

The students were encouraged to choose different genres and complete a 30-book reading challenge. Thank you to the teachers who encouraged the students read bringing the joy of reading to their classrooms.

Book Week

Harrison celebrated Book Week with many wonderful activities including Mystery Reading, Buddy Reading, competitions, lunchtime activities and shared reading time in classrooms.

On Friday 25th August we were excited to celebrate with a Book character parade which was so much fun!

Thank you to the library committee and the extra staff who helped organise the parade, assembly, and literacy activities.

Catherine Meatheringham - Author Visit.

Last Friday we were lucky to receive a visit by a lovely local author Catherine Meatheringham.

Catherine read her beautiful books including ‘Knock Knock ‘to Year 2 and she talked about the writing process, the importance of reading and the inspiration for her stories.

The students were very enthused and enjoyed asking many questions.

Thank you, Catherine, for visiting our school! https://www.catherinemeatheringham.com/

Harrison School's student led café is happy to announce we now have an EFTPOS machine.

On August 16, Harrison School hosted a semi-final for the Rostrum Public Speaking Competition in the Senior Performing Arts Space. We had Kaitlyn from Year 4 representing Harrison, going up against several other schools from North Canberra. She presented her fantastic speech “Going Backwards” to a large audience of visitors to the school, family and Rostrum Adjudicators.  We had Imogen C from Year 6 hosting the event, with Leah W acting as timekeeper, and some amazing catering from Linda Kwong from the food tech faculty. It was a successful night and every guest to Harrison was impressed by the event.

Kaitlyn’s rostrum journey ended at the Semi-Final. Congratulations on all of your success Kaitlyn.

Islamic Education in School

For our families who observe the Islamic faith, in 2024 we will be offering an Islamic Education program to all schools. Much like the Christian Education in Schools program, which is in many ACT schools, this program being delivered by Islamic Education Services (ACTIES) will see volunteers come in and teach Islam. This will be a once a week half hour lesson on a fixed day of the week. If you would like your child/ren to participate in this program in 2024, please complete the below registration form.
